It is special to me because I was born in the Canal Zone. My parents brought me to the states when I was very young and I haven't had a chance to go back, although I have an opportunity to visit in November and I am REALLY looking forward to it. I can't help wondering what would have happened if we would have stayed in Panama........would have been a very different life! Keep up the GOOD work! Hope at least some of you will be able to stay to keep the tradition alive. Everything will work out for the best. Clayton |

I miss the friends we left there, but it is so good to be able to see the boys and their families. If anyone passes this way, please give us a call at 830-896-038l and we will give you directions to our new home and our acres of scrub cedar. Haven't tried to get anything to grow in this rocky soil, but I am making progress. I joined a garden club to get some hints as to what will and will not grow in this area. Jackie |

He graduated from Balboa High School in 1952 and we got married in 1963. We have seven children and 14 grandchildren. We live in Orlando, Florida. Let's try not to forget that. Panama is the only place in the world where one can actually feel free. I miss mango salad, sugar cane, and BOYO. I went back down for the last graduation. It's really sad when some things have to come to an end, but the memories live on forever. PANAMA RULES! |

| Name: Merritt J. Bender Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Gamboa--now in Seabrook,Texas Time: 1999-09-09 18:04:57 Comments: Have really enjoyed surfing through a bunch of fond memories---you guys(czbrats) have done a fantastic job of putting this together. I do have an item that I want to donate to the Pan Canal Museum--it is a surveyors level which the French used while they were trying to survey and build the canal.I once saw the theodolite that is a partner to the level in the museum in Panama at the old air terminal that was located on Albrook.I am an old Gamboa resident--my Dad worked for the Dredging Division--I graduated from Balboa Higk School in 1948---some of my most fond memories are From my days in Panama--All three of our children were born in the Canal Zone at Gorgas Hosp. And I still have a daughter in Panama ,married to Dean Homa (Kim) so we do visit usually once a year--so---we have seen the many changes that have taken place. I am just so glad that I was fortunate enough to live there during the good days--we came to Panama in 1939- I later went to work for the Inter American Geodetic Survey (IAGS)whom I worked for from 1948 until 1967--when I came to Houston to work for NASA--we did the Lunar Mapping and the mapping for the Lunar landings--when that was over I went back to IAGS in 1978 and worked at the IAGS Cartographic School at Fort Clayton until I retired in 1989---so I have seen the good and the bad that have taken place---I am really thankful for the works that you all are doing --we were certainly lucky to have been a small part of something so great as THE PANAMA CANAL |
