My father was in the Commissary Division and worked at the Tivoli, Red Tank and La Boca stores. We left the Zone in May of '53 to permanently relocate in Marine City, Michigan. In retrospect it was not a good move. I lived on Carr St. until shortly after I started Kindergarten, when we moved to Barnaby St to be closer to the school. I lived in the first house from the corner of Carr and Barnaby. I went to the public school only for kindergarten, then started walking all the way back to the old neighborhood to go to parochial school. the sisters who taught me at St. Mary's were Sisters Adela, Expedita, Willabalda and Judith. I also remember Sisters Mary Joseph and Dorothy. My classmates included Lola Frauenheim, Joseph Kinney, Willie Kaufmann, Skippy Lord, Bobby Sprague, Edwin Isaac, Elaine Herring, Josephine Company (?) among others. Kids That lived around me were Judy Butler (the original "Little Red-haired Girl"), Bill Fuhlman, the Mareno brothers, Freddie Para, among others. We moved to 0814 Plank St shortly after I started the 3rd grade. Kids in that neighborhood included: Roy, Johnny and Harriet Watson, Richard Morris and a whole bunch of Corrigans. The Zone was "The Old Country" to me and I miss it, as it was, still. |
