A lot of what made the canal history is either alive and well on the Mississippi or being carefully restored. I am referring to the French influence that was very subtle in the Zone and rarely ever verbalized. Go see for yourself. Choose the right tourist stops and you will find it very educational. I especially enjoyed the bonfires along the Mississippi River intended to guide "Papa Noel" to the little Cajun kids. (Reminds me of the Christmas tree burns.) Amazing how these things seem to have origins that we never thought of. |

I remember competing against the BHS ROTC drill team. I remember getting drunk on galita island, goofy falls, waiting for ships to clear the locks. Riding those infamous buses across the isthmus to go to school. I remember seeing all the crabs migrate from the inland to the sea. I loved coconuts and bannnas in the backyard and the coati mundis and armadilos. I remember hiking with the boys scouts across the Panama canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific. People still don't believe that one until I show them the patch I got. In all I had a great time. I would like to say hey to everyone of the B.Q. God bless you all. I also drove the Bookmoble across to the Atlantic side to Ft. Gulick and Sherman.I can't say living in Panama was a laugh a minute, but I took advantage of the opportunity to get out of the usual tourist traps and visit remote parts of the country with a Canal Zone Library friend of mine, Manya Nita. She took me on a couple of trips to visit the Guaymi Indians, as well as on trips to San Blas, Contadora. and many places up-country. I've got lots of pictures & memories from those years in Panama and would like to share them with someone who is still down there. No matter how frustrating the politics would get,the country and the people outside the cities. remain special to me. I hope I can hear from soemone soon.....Joe Carlson |
