Time: 1998-07-25 04:54:25 Comments: My mother and uncles, Opal, Eddie & Frank Holgerson, graduated from Cristobal High. My grandfather worked on the canal during its construction and sailed on one of the first ships to transit. Later my uncle Eddie retired as a canal pilot. I attended Panamanian schools until moving to the States in 1961. Attended Penn State and after 20 years as an aviator, retired from the Marine Corps in 1991. Many wonderful memories of Panama and the Canal Zone. I remember my grandfather taking me to the Armed Forces Day open house at Cocosolo back in the fifties. Maybe that's where I got the idea of someday attending flight school at Pensacola, Fla. Love your webpage and the many memories it brings back. Keep up the good work and I hope I can someday contribute an article or photo. Dan Gomez |

It was a lot of hard work and I don't know how much help you got putting it all together and keeping it going. You even managed to arrange for Panamanian weather, hot muggy and a shot of rain. Amazing. I don't know how you did it. Everyone looked great. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't look into a little plastic surgery for all those wrinkles. It took me 35 years to get there, but I wont wait that long for the next one. A big round of applause for the Angel and the Kid and anyone who helped them. |

| Name: Louis J. Barbier Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Panama, Republic of Panama Time: 1998-07-01 05:15:48 Comments: Yes, Rowdy......you are absolutely right. The British Bikes were infamous for their workmanship when came to their electical systems. The guys that had Triumphs were always having lighting problems at the worst times. And we all know how dark it gets in Panama after dark. I guess that is why the Panama Canal Commissary sold so much 3M reflective tape to place on your rear bumpers of the family bus. But I can remember riding a bike just passed the front gate of Albrook Air force Station where there is that little bump, I was in the buddy seat, well just before we went airborne the lights quit on us.......wow, what do we do? We were very lucky! When we landed on tierra firma the impact turn our lights on again. And it was an English Bike. Let me ask you this Rowdy, there was a guy who always wore grease stained levis way down on his hips, rather slim about 6ft 5" or 6" with engineer boots, worked with the Navy at the tank farm at milla uno, was in his late 20's(I think), and hung around Balboa or Diablo Clubhouses. Some say he had been in the marines but one of his pride possessions besides his levis was a monoster of a bike. It was jet black and accented in chrome. It purred like a bad cat at an idle. And flat out it could take any bike in the Canal Zone at that time. In fact there were two drags that I can remember. One on K-9 Road about ten o'clock at night and the other in the wee hours of the morning when the traffic from Los Rios to the Miraflores light was almost nada. The Canal Zone Buses had stop running and the drivers of the chivas had all gone home. He won both of those leaving the other bike about almost a 1/4 mile back. That bike was fast, silent, and like I said could go like the wind. All these years I thought it was a Norton Black Shadow. That has to be over 40 years ago. I remember somebody mentioned the name Vincent, but all this time I thought that was the tall stranger's name. I really didn't know him except by sight, he kind of hung by himself mostly. Now you got me thinking........I believe you. Where you at BHS when the little viking drove a Morris Minor? This was also and English made car. No, problem finding parking at the Balboa Bowling Alley. Four or five of us could lift it and place it in the smallest spot. There was another guy from Cocoli who drove what I believe was a Woosley. Another English car. Lots a problems with the magneto. Well, thanks for the updates on the bikes. |
| Name: Rowdy Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Time: 1998-07-01 02:18:50 Comments: I enjoyed Louis Barbiers remembrances of the clubhouse, but have one minor correction regarding the motorcycles. The Black Shadow was not made by Norton. It was made by Vincent. I owned a Black Shadow while in the Zone and felt that I did my part in maintaining its evil reputation. The Vincent motorcycles were typical of all english automotive products: a combination of art and engineering, excellence and mediocrity. They were beautiful machines aesthetically and the mechanical aspects were wonderful. The electrical systems, however, were a joke. As often as not, they would not start because of a problem with the magneto and when they did start, it was equally as likely that the lights would not work. I recall one late night when mine was running particularly well. I had left my spacious estate in Williamsone Place and as I passed the Balboa Police Station, my lights died. I was disappointed because I really wanted to get out to Summit and give it a run. I made the turn onto Balboa Road and head |
