France Field is still there. Some of the house are nice, but most are not. Margarita and Gatun are pretty much the same. I will send some pictures as soon as I get them back. |

| Name: Carrie (Anderson) Muller Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Balboa, CZ Time: 1999-03-10 06:01:04 Comments: Wow, this is so wonderful. This is a great way for the CZ brats to communicate, and remember all the good times. I loved the chiva buses, ginnups, arros con pollo, skipping school to go to the cut, and my mean 4th grade teacher with the long nails (different color everyday) at Balboa Elementary, MRS. LANG.How she would make me put my nose in that round circle she drew on the chalk board at least once a week. I loved her! I remember MRS. CLARK over there too. She was the nice. I remember, my Uncle Kenny had to show me the way around the CJHS so I wouldn't be afraid to start school there since it seemed so far away. And how Kelly Morris and Kevin Croft were soooo popular!Speaking of class of 1981. Then my best friend became my step sister, and our good times with Andy and Tito. How I told my Father I was only having a couple of my friends over for my going away party on the back patio and nearly all the population of the zone ended up getting drunk on wiki juice and ended up spread eagle in my back yard till dawn.WHEEEW! And I said that all in one breath. |

| Name: Dave Howie Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Atlanta, GA, USA Time: 1999-03-10 00:25:52 Comments: Hi all! I was in Panama as a Navy brat from 1972-1974. I went to Coco Solo ES, grades 2-4. Despite the young age, I have many fond memories of the CZ. We lived in military housing on the water across from Cristobol HS. I got my "B" and "I" swimming badges at the CHS pool. We used to have swimming contests and I remember a girl, she was a curly red-head, who would always give me good competition. I played baseball on the Apaches (second base) near the football stadium. There was a girl that lived in Gold Row named Doreen Burns who I remember to be my first love, though she had little clue. We used to fish off of a pier in front of our house and catch "rock grouper", sergent majors, gar (it was really cool to catch a gar.) and even eels. I remember keeping little plastic baggies of shrimp (for bait)in the freezer. That also reminds me of the time my fishing buddy came over one night with a present for me - My mom opened the door and found herself face to face with exactly one-half of the moray eel we had caught earlier that day. It would make great bait, of course! I remember a huge, huge, huge manta ray that roamed the bay, his name was Mopula - his wing span was something like 25'. We used to roll our wagon over the land crab holes whenever we noticed one of those exterminators in the area. It worked, and I think the crabs really appreciated our efforts, as well. We used to take overnight sailing trips on my dad's 28' ketch, "Mistress". I remember catching a little seahorse the first week we arrived in Coco Solo. A year or so later, we chased an iguana through the high school and finally caught it. (Of course I let both go.) I still have a couple of those beautiful brilliant blue Morfo butterflies in a clear plastic box with cotton. I think butterfly hunting was my favorite thing to do back then. I remember when it used to rain so hard and for so long, that the streets would stay flooded for hours. We would round up all the big sticks and try to make blockades on some of our neighborhood streets - so the cars couldn't get through! It never worked. Oh yeah, the tree climbing was great, too. Panama has the best trees I've ever seen for climbing. And going to the rain forest and maybe seeing a 3-toed sloth. I also remember eating the mangos right from the trees, and the coconuts, too. And the neat little hermit crabs we'd find on the beach. I remember watching TV about what I know now to be the Vietnam war. And fishing in Gatun Lake for peacock bass, with all the submerged trees...I remember...more than I thought I did... I am suddenly feeling quite nostalgic. I haven't thought about this stuff for 20 years. If you are reading this, I hope my notes brought back some fond memories. I enjoyed this. Thanks for reading. Dave |
